If you're Venezuelan, living in the US with TPS, and working remotely, Spain could be your next destination. In this post, we explain how to settle in Spain with the Digital Nomad Visa, what are its advantages and requirements.

The end of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) means that thousands of Venezuelans will have to leave the United States. The measure went into effect on April 7 and affects 350,000 Venezuelans, who must find another legal way to stay, emigrate again, or risk being deported. If this is your case, it's time for you to know that the Digital Nomad Visa is not difficult to obtain if you work remotely. You must have income of €33,152 per year, studies or work experience of three years or more.

In this context, Spain emerges as a realistic, accessible and culturally close option for Venezuelans with remote employment, thanks to the Digital Nomad VisaFurthermore, Spain offers one of the lowest costs of living in Western Europe and the possibility of applying for Spanish citizenship after two years. It is, therefore, one of the main legal options following the end of TPS in the US.

Who can apply?

Venezuelans in the US with profiles such as:

  • Web or software developers

  • Graphic and UX/UI designers

  • Digital marketing or SEO consultants

  • Financial or administrative advisors

  • Community managers, editors and translators

  • Remote employees of foreign companies

  • Self-employed people who work remotely

If you have a contract or are self-employed with demonstrable income working online, you may be eligible for this type of visa.

Advantages of the Digital Nomad Visa

  • The deadline for a response to your visa application is only 20 working days. And if at the end of that period you have no response, it means that your visa has been approved. This is called favorable administrative silence. In the other types of visas, the lack of response means that it has not been approved and you have to start over.
  • You can apply for it from Spain if you are a tourist or student. In this case the residency is granted for 3 years.
  • You can apply for one from the U.S. at the Spanish consulate closest to your home. In this case, you'll receive a visa for one year, and then renew it for three more years while you're in Spain.
  • Upon completion of the first 3 years of the visa, it can be renewed for 2 more years. After which permanent residency is granted.
  • Time spent in Spain on the digital nomad visa computes for Spanish nationality. We remind you that Hispanic Americans can apply for Spanish citizenship when they have been living in Spain for 2 years.
  • As for the family, this visa has great advantages. It allows you to be accompanied to Spain by your spouse, minor and adult children who depend on you, and your parents if they are in your care. Not only that, but it also authorizes them to work, either as self-employed or in a dependent relationship.
  • It is possible to register for Social Security in Spain only with a passport, during the first six months.
  • It allows you to be absent from Spain for six months of the year.
  • It allows free travel within the Schengen Area (the European Union, plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland) without the need for additional visas, facilitating both business and vacation travel.

Tax benefits

In addition to all these advantages, there is also favorable tax treatment. The digital nomad in Spain is eligible for pay taxes as a non-residentwhich is 24% of their income. This is a benefit with respect to the taxes paid by residents, which are between 30% and 47%.

This option to pay less tax is valid for the first five years. Thereafter, taxes are paid according to the usual tax scale for residents.
